A good team building day has to do more than fill a calendar slot. It has to change the pace, get people talking, and give the team a shared experience they will actually remember.
That was the aim when E-Marketing joined Peak Events in the Peak District for a full day of outdoor team challenges, with Bike & Boot Inns supporting the stay, rooms and evening meal. The result was a practical, energetic and memorable team day that combined Capture the Flag, rock climbing, abseiling, boulder scrambling and problem-solving challenges in one full programme.
The brief was to create a proper team experience
E-Marketing needed a day that felt different from the usual team away day - not a conference room or a long agenda, but something active, shared and enjoyable, with enough challenge to bring people together under light pressure.
We designed the day around movement, problem solving and trust. Bike & Boot Inns added the practical comfort around the experience, including rooms and an evening meal, so the activity became part of a wider stay rather than a standalone session.
Capture the Flag set the tone for the day
Capture the Flag worked as the main anchor activity because it is simple to understand and quick to get into. Teams can start moving straight away, but the game soon brings out communication, planning and decision making. People had to watch the ground, read the other team, protect their own area and decide when to take a risk.
The wider programme added pressure in the right way
- Capture the Flag
- Rock climbing
- Abseiling
- A scramble through the boulders
- Team challenges built around communication and problem solving
Each element asked the team to use a slightly different skill. Climbing brought focus and encouragement. Abseiling brought trust and confidence. The boulder scramble added shared movement through rough terrain. The team challenges gave people a reason to talk, plan and adapt.

Bike & Boot made the day feel like a retreat
Rooms and an evening meal meant the team could arrive, take part in the full programme, then come back to a comfortable base. The evening meal gave everyone time to talk properly after the activity - which is where the stories from the day get retold and the shared experience starts to settle in.
“The strongest team building days are often the ones people keep talking about after they get home.”
Lessons for planning a team building day
- Choose an activity with a clear goal, so everyone can get involved quickly
- Build in variety to keep the energy fresh across a full day
- Think beyond the activity: rooms, food and downtime shape how people remember the day
- Capture the real moments on video - genuine effort and reactions show the value far better than staged content
